Everyone says your haters don’t pay your bills. I’ve started to think they do.
After my divorce, it felt like everyone had something to say about me. I couldn’t control the conversations happening without me, but I could decide how much of them I carried. That’s when I started warding my name. It became how I protected my energy, and my name, while I rebuilt my life.
Here’s what changed how I carry that. There’s an old belief that energy spoken toward you doesn’t just disappear. When someone speaks against you, it clears something out of your path and comes back to you as blessing.
Warding your name is how you decide what that blessing becomes.
I’m a spiritual girly, and I respect every woman’s beliefs, whatever they are. This is just what works for me, so take what feels right for you and leave the rest.
Before I show you exactly how I do it, I want you to understand why it matters. Because this isn’t new, and it isn’t random. People have treated the name as sacred for thousands of years.
your name has always been sacred
In ancient Egypt, your name was part of your soul. They called it the ren, and it was considered essential to who you were and to your survival after death.
The names of pharaohs were written inside an oval called a cartouche. That ring around the name was meant to protect them from evil spirits, in life and after death. When you circle your name in this practice, you are drawing your own version of that ring.
Even your brain treats your name differently. In a loud, crowded room, you tune out almost everything. But you’ll still catch your own name in a conversation you weren’t even listening to. Your name goes straight to you. So of course the words people attach to it land deeper than other words.
it’s the same idea as the evil eye
The evil eye is the belief that an envious look can bring harm. Amulets against it go back about 5,000 years, and you’ll find some version of it across the Mediterranean, the Middle East, South Asia, Africa, and Latin America. The blue nazar, the hamsa hand, and rock salt are all protections against it.
Warding your name works on the same principle, for envious words instead of envious looks. Your name is the doorway. Gossip travels through it. So does jealousy, and the quiet wish that you fail.
So you guard the door. Not by fighting anyone, explaining yourself, or checking who said what. By deciding, once, that every mention of your name works in your favor.
what you’ll need, and why
A white candle. Light shows up in nearly every faith as a sign of presence and clarity. White keeps the intention clean.
Salt. One of the oldest protectors there is. In Japan, small mounds of salt are placed outside homes and at shrines to purify and invite protection. Rock salt is also used against the evil eye.
Bay leaves. The bay laurel was Apollo’s sacred tree. The ancient Greeks crowned winners at the Pythian Games with it, the oracle at Delphi was said to chew its leaves before she prophesied, and Romans believed it could not be struck by lightning. Victory and protection, in one leaf.
Cinnamon. In many spiritual practices, cinnamon is used to quicken an intention and draw in abundance.
Crystals, cleansed first, so nothing old or borrowed comes along. Use any you already own.
A blank page and a pen.
Nothing has to be fancy. A tea light and kitchen salt work.
why clockwise, and why toward you
Moving clockwise follows the path of the sun, and it was considered lucky and blessed. People would walk around someone sunwise three times to bless them. Going the other way was considered unlucky. So when you circle your name three times clockwise, you’re doing something people have done to bless each other for centuries.
Folding the page toward you follows the same logic. Toward you calls something in. Away from you sends it off.
when to do it
Many people choose a new moon, because it’s about beginnings. I do mine whenever I notice I’ve been carrying other people’s opinions around like they’re mine. Pick a quiet evening when no one needs you for twenty minutes.
how i ward my name
Set your space. Pour a small circle of salt on a plate or tray. Place your candle in the middle, with the crystals, a pinch of cinnamon, and the bay leaves around it.
Write your full name in the center of the blank page.
Circle it three times, clockwise. Slowly. This is your ring of protection.
Write your prayer around the outside of the circle. Mine is below.
Around the edges, write what you’re inviting in. Peace, protection, wealth, love. Be specific to your life right now.
Fold the page toward you three times. Always toward you.
Tuck it under the candle and light it.
Speak your ward out loud. Saying it is the seal.
Let the candle burn all the way down, and stay with it while it burns. If you need to leave, snuff it out and relight it later.
When it’s done, keep the folded page somewhere private. A nightstand drawer is fine.
the prayer i use
Read it as written, or change any word that doesn’t sound like you.
My name is protected.
Every word spoken about me, kind or unkind, returns to me as blessing.
What is meant to harm me is changed before it reaches me.
Let gossip become opportunity. Let envy become abundance.
Let every mention of my name open a door I am meant to walk through.
I release what was never mine to carry, and I keep what is.
And so it is.
why it works, even if you’re skeptical
You don’t have to take this on faith alone. A ritual gives the worry somewhere to go. Your hands are busy, your breathing slows, and for a few minutes you decide on purpose what you’re keeping and what you’re putting down.
So the ritual doesn’t stop people from talking. It changes how much of it you carry.
then stop checking on it
This is the hardest part. Don’t hover. Don’t look for proof, and don’t go reading who said what. You’ve spoken it, written it, and sealed it. The only thing left is to trust it.
What I notice afterward isn’t that people stop talking. It’s that it stops landing. That was the shift for me after my divorce. The talk didn’t end overnight, but I stopped carrying it.
If this found you at the right time, send it to the friend who’s been carrying someone else’s words. And tell me in the comments which part you’re trying first.
